Time To Give Props, Again

image
Phil Rocks.

I found myself this week thinking about Phil’s work again. Over the past few weeks he has redesigned his website, he has won accolades and money from the software he uses, and now has been asked to speak at an event about his business and how he does it effectively.

I tell him quite often how proud I am, but in times of dwindling bank accounts and creditors calling, it falls on deaf ears. At least when I say it here, the whole rest of the world hears it, too. It makes it that much more real.

Phil is a giant pit of ideas. Cristina from Right Angle and office-mate of his, tells me often how impressed she is with his ability to come up with decent ideas time after time. I could not agree more. I know that even in the lowest times, there is something wonderful right around the corner that will help him step in the right direction.

Everyone warned us about how the first year in a business was the hardest. When that one year mark passed, we waited for the money to fall from the sky and held our breath for greener pastures only to have the same people say “Oh, no, we meant the first FIVE years.” So now we are waiting for the number two year mark to pass, quickly.

Although things are tight, I still feel like we are moving in the right direction. Phil comes up with another new approach on a monthly basis, weaning out the ones that don’t turn out quite as well as grasping on to the ones that give us both hope. I was shocked last week when I asked Phil if he would continue to work if he won the lottery and he responded, without hesitation, “YES!”

Anyway, I think he is the bees knees. Apparently, I am not the only one.

I, too, am very proud of Phil.  I don’t think I have ever met anyone I have been as easily comfortable with as I have with Phil.  He is one of the good ones and I am so proud to have him as a member of this family. Thanks, Phil, for being part of my life.

OK - now I feel bad for not giving Phil the contract for the site I am building. wink

That said, Phil impressed me with his professionalism and creativity during my interview of designers.

I’ve continued to keep up with his work because 1) we both love Expression Engine and 2) he connected with my work immediately. Whenever I come up with new ideas ("hmm...I wonder if I could build a site to do X, Y and Z), Phil is (honestly) the first person I think about.

Tripp,
Don’t beat yourself up too bad. I am his wife and have to keep reassuring myself I did the right thing. My contract with him is a little longer than a website.  smile

But thanks for taking a moment to agree. I am sure you will be doing business with him one day.

Phil is the Bees Knees.  We are lucky to share space with him.  Despite his robot dance when he’s really happy, he continually inspires us and helps up be more creative.  I frequently give him the pep talk about how different he is than all the other designers/developers we’ve ever worked with, why he’s different, and how to convey that message to the world at large.  Recently one of our clients who needed a website started asking some questions about Phil (we had already told them they WOULD use Phil, no if ands or buts!) and I got seriously bent out of shape.  So I know he will be succesful.  Last night Laura at Dancing Elephants told me she is constantly telling her classes about Phil and how awesome he is.  I am 4 years into this business and just starting to make consistent money.  So hang in there.  You are both great people!

Hi Meredith

Thanks for your comment on granny.  I couldn’t think of anything to write and then decided to include them both.

Amazing how our perspective changes as we grow older.
